I have a moto surfboard but i'm not willing to give it a go, 'cause the internet provider can tell how much bandwidth your using.

and if they find out you are stealing from them, whats to stop them passing that info. to the police.

but thanks for the info. its always nice to know how to do these things.

I have a Motorola SURFBoard SB4220 and I have Suscom as my ISP my setup works great with it because you can either Connect to the computer USB cable or Ethernet. Never tried that though. I have fast enough internet for me. Very Happy

yes you have both options, but usualy you can only use the USB or the Ethernet and not both at the same time

the ones that do allow you to use both at the same time still don't work as it does not act like a switch/hub but more like 2 routers and kai can not use a USB adaptor to connect to the console

so you can do
Modem (USB) -> PC (USB) -> Console (crossover cable)
or
Modem (Cat5) -> router/switch/hub -> PC/Console <- Recomended

yes, I have that same modem, and you can not use them at the same time.

Once one has been used the modem disables the use of the other conection, until you unplug the modem from the mains, and then it will look to see what one you use then.

cat 5, its a faster connection... but it depends on your speed, if you have a connection over 1Mbit then you may notice a increase in speed using the ethernet cable

i thought USB was approx 12mbit, which would mean you wouldnt really notice any difference. If you used USB as a network (dont know if its possible...) but if you did then you might notice a speed decrease

You can network two pc's via usb but you need a special usb cable with a built in adapter, or a converter and two usb cables.

Cutting two usb cables and soldering the wires will NOT work though. You'll end up shorting the pc's... in case anyone was thinking of trying this. Wink

^was gonna do that for a friend to network his LANless laptop to my pc until I read up on it......
Thank God I read up on it. Smile

True, however most devices only use the 1.5Mbps and not the full 12

atlast something i know about
right ok as far as i no (dont always trust me)
the enet(cat5) is better for sustaind high bandwidth apication (ok so uk braudband doesent push it) primeraly becous the usb cable modems tend to use cpu cycles to maintainthe conection but this is maintaind as part of hardware protacal under enet
hope i got that right and that it helps any way l8r

I've done it before. I was able to download at a max speed of, I think 1.2MB/s. I used it for a few hours, then put it back to normal, hoping I wouldn't be caught.

The very next morning someone from Comcast called and asked me if I was aware that someone had tampered with the software on my cable modem. I told the guy that I had done it, just to try it, and that I wouldn't do it again. I didn't get fined or banned or any of that crap, just a warning. So, it does work, it's probably not worth your time, however.

thats what i thought... probably if you kept it on you would have gotten in some major trouble. they have to monitor the shit out of that.
