I don't know if I will be able to help if the quick start guide confuses you, but here it goes.
To play other people you just have to be in the same arena/sub-arena as them. Meaning that as long as you guys are in the same arena(chat room) you will theorically be able to see them in game or in the roster. Now if you cannot see them, there might be a problem with your connection. Common things are that no one has refreshed their game so they all see people who they were playing with before(very common with MHF2), and programs that might not let you connect to your friends. So basically you do not need to add people to your friendlist, just have them in the same arena.
Linksys wireless router can only be used if it is version 1, 2, or 3. This means that even thought it is not mentioned in the guide, 4, 5, 6, and 8 will not work. But this does not mean you get it out from the box and play. You have to install a custom firmware made by Ahman. You will also have to open the port 30000 on your Linksys wireless router, or it will give you problems.
