Sunday October 5,2008

A brazen robber hired a group of identically dressed decoys to help him make his getaway from a security van hold-up.

He placed an advert on the Craigslist social networking site saying that he was looking for workers to help on a road maintenance project.

The dozen applicants for the £14-an-hour job were told wear a blue shirt, yellow high visibility vest, goggles and a surgical mask and meet near a Bank of America branch in Seattle.

Minutes before they arrived the robber, wearing exactly the same clothes, held up a security van, overcoming a guard with pepper spray and grabbing a bag of money.

As he fled from the scene, he tossed away his work clothes and jumped into a tyre inner tube he had left on the bank of a nearby river. Witnesses said he was last seen floating gently away on the current.

When police arrived they were given a description of the robber – and were astonished to find it fitted almost a dozen other men milling about in the area.

One of the job hunters “hired” for the road work said he had responded to the online advert.

“I came across the ad that was for a prevailing wage job for $28.50 an hour,” he said.

“We were told to wear certain clothing – yellow vest, safety goggles, a respirator mask and, if possible, a blue shirt.”

The man, who gave his name as Mike, said there were about a dozen other similarly dressed men who had answered the advert.

“When no one showed up we thought we had been stood up. Then we saw all the police and heard about the robbery,” he added.

FBI and state police searching for the robber believe he had an accomplice waiting nearby with a boat who picked him up from the inner tube.

Local people admitted they had to admire the ingenuity of the robber.

“It sounds like something out of a Hollywood movie,” said resident Byron Bevard.

I saw that movie, and I gotta say that's damn similar if not the same of what happened. I'd say its less ingenuous then it is trying something out from a movie you just saw. It was pretty creative of the guy to use Craigslist for the setup though.
