HOWTO: Start Xlink Kai Engine on system boot

Hi,

I run Xlink Kai in a VMWare virtual machine. So basically when I want to play online, I boot up the virtual machine (VM). I then navigate to the web interface to chat and join rooms.

To make my life easier, I configured the Windows XP VM to start the Xlink Kai Engine on system boot. Here's how.

1) create a Windows XP VM;
Please make sure to install all the latest patches, configure the network, firewall etc.
2) install Xlink Kai;
3) configure Xlink Kai;
As I won't use the GUI on the VM itself (but rather on my workstation by browsing to http://<Xlink-VM-ip-address>:34522), I unticked the 'start gui' box.
4) add Xlink Kai Engine to the registry.
By adding a key with the location of the Xlink Kai engine as its value to "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run", the engine will start on system boot. Alternatively, copy&paste below code in an "xlink.reg" text file and double click it to import the key into your registry.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Xlink Kai Engine"="C:\\Program Files\\XLink Kai\\kaiEngine.exe"

Note that I used XLinkKai-7.4.18-win32.msi and installed it in the default folder (C:\Program Files\Xlink Kai). Please change the path names accordingly if you choose to install in a different location.

Thanks, I figured I'd post this as this seems (to me anyway) a lot easier than configuring a service, and this works just as well.

I just dragged and dropped the XLink icon into the Startup folder. Smile

LOL, I didn't even think of that! haha

Now, there must be some advantage to my approach... (can't think of one right now though)

The advantage would be if your using Mac OSX or Linux. You can use this method to run XLink nice and easily without hassle
