Datel Wifi Max for PSP PS3 DS and Wii
#090719 Guide Updated - now with Windows Vista!
Note: Even though the packing shows a black stick, there is a white one in it.
So as it took me a little while to figure out how to get the stick working with xlink, i decided to write a how to – hopefully this will help others to get into games quicker.
Please note: English is not my native language – so please forgive me all possible grammar/spelling mistakes. Thanks:)
Also note: All screenshots were taken on a pc with german Windows, i'll tried my best to translate the options.
If there is enough interest, i could post the guide in german as well.
Also feel free to translate it in any language you speak and post it here.
I assume you have the following setup:
1.PC with Windows XP (32bit) – Vista 32/Vista 64 see below for the Vista Section.
2.Already installed the latest Version of xlink kai (in my case 7.4.18), and have an account.
3.Have administrator rights on the PC.
4.Bought a Datel Wifi Max (white) with the model WL-685R(written on the back).
This model has the RT73 chip set.
5.You have set your PSP Ad-Hoc channel to "Ch 1".
So lets start the step by step Guide:
1.------------------------
Put the CD that came with the Wifi Max into your drive – do NOT plugin the Wifi Max yet.
Here you have two options:
You can install the Wifi Max tools and the driver – if you want to do so start the Setup.exe on the cd root and click on psp.
I will not cover the tools here as they are pretty much self explaining.
You can install the Wifi Max drivers only – if you want to do so, go into the "Ralink" folder and start the RT7x_Setup.exe.
You will be prompted to choose between driver and utility or just the driver, i would recommend to install with the first option, as it will save you some hassle later.
After that he will ask for a configuration tool – choose the Ralink tool.
As the configuration i choose „Optimize for wifi mode“.
Once the installation is finished, plug in the Wifi Max – it should install without problems.
2.------------------------
Go to: Start → Control panel → network connections.
Right click on the Wireless Network Connection that has the RT73 USB Wireless LAN card description and choose „Properties“
It should look like this:
Here you choose „configure“ and then „advanced“.
In the list you will have to change the following value:
PSP Xlink mode → choose „Enable“ (This will enable the card to work with xlink)
Confirm with „OK“
Note: I also changed the Network type to ad-hoc, but i don't know if that is necessary.
3.------------------------
Again: Right click on the Wireless Network Connection that has the RT73 USB Wireless LAN card description and choose „Properties“.
This time scroll down in the middle list and double click on "Internet protocol TCP/IP".
Choose to use a static IP Address and type in the values seen on this picture:
Click OK and you are done with configuring the card.
Just a quick info why i did this: If you set a static IP Address the connection between the PSP and the card will establish a lot quicker, as you will not have to wait for a address to be assigned.
4.-----OPTIONAL-----------
Note: This section can be skipped - it is only important if you have games that change the ssid.
I did not know that as i originally wrote this guide.
Go to Start → All programs → Xlink Kai → Configure Kai.
Please make sure you set the marked options as shown in this picture:
Click on save once you are done.
5.------------------------
Right click on the Kai tray icon and choose close.
Boot up your PSP Game and go into the multiplayer lobby.
In my case i played Monster hunter freedom unite – so its the online gathering hall.
If the game you play has more than one lobby, choose always the first one as you will only see people online that are in the same lobby.
Once you are inside the lobby and your psp wifi light is flashing, double click on the Ralink tray icon.
Click on „Network“ and then choose scan – you will see a list looking like this:
Here choose the network with PSP_XXXX in the name and click connect.
Now you are connected with your PSP and are just moments away from playing on xlink kai.
6.------------------------
Open xlink kai
Note: If you choose the "follow psp ssid id" in the xlink configuration – it will disconnect your wireless connection with the psp – don't worry that is perfectly fine if that option is checked.
Just reconnect to the PSP_XXXX network in the Ralink software.
Kai will show a small pop up in the lower right corner that it changes the ssid to PSP_XXXX.
What you will see now depends on the client you use, if you use the „Standard-GUI“ do the following, if you use the web interface – see below:
Standard GUI
Login into kai and click on the globe – you can choose your games from there but don't do that yet – instead click on the magnifying glass.
This will open up the diagnostics mode:
The following options are important:
Network reachable: Yes (can take some time!) – if that is not the case, you will have to forward the port.
See the forum for a how to.
Once you verified the options click on the „Folder“
Here it should list a PSP - if it says „Sony PSP,configured successfully“ you are fine.
If not, check that you did everything as posted in the guide – if you did please search the forums.
Web interface
Login into kai and click on „Metric“
This will open up the diagnostics:
The following options are important:
Network reachable: Yes (can take some time!) – if that is not the case, you will have to forward the port.
See the forum for a how to.
It should list your PSP here -If not, check that you did everything as posted in the guide – if you did please search the forums.
7.------------------------
You are ready to go – just choose the game you want to play and open up a lobby or use a existing one.
You will see players joining and can start playing.
I hope you found my little guide helpful.
Enjoy your games and if you have some questions, feel free to send me a PM or ask me on Xlink.
Also: If you have an idea how i could improve the guide, just send me a message.
And again: Sorry for any grammar/spelling mistakes :D
A big thanks to all the people that have written the other guides, i found lots of them very useful.
==============Vista Section=============
Since there were that many questions and messages regarding the vista 32/ vista 64 setup, i decided to update the guide for the vista users.
I only have a Vista 64bit PC - but the steps should be the same on 32bit.
Again - I assume you have the following setup:
1.PC with Windows Vista 32 / Windows Vista 64
2.Already installed the latest Version of xlink kai (in my case 7.4.18), and have an account.
3.Have administrator rights on the PC.
4.Bought a Datel Wifi Max (white) with the model WL-685R(written on the back).
This model has the RT73 chip set.
5.You have set your PSP Ad-Hoc channel to „Ch 1“.
1.------------------------
Download the latest Ralink Driver from http://www.ralinktech.com/en/04_support/support.php?sn=500
There Driver we need is the USB (RT257x/RT2671/RT520x).
Once you finished downloading - DO NOT RUN THE DRIVER YET.
Instead navigate to the downloaded file and right click on it - choose "properties" and then "compatibility".
Check the box for the compatibility mode "Windows XP (Service Pack2) and click apply:
Plug in the Wifi Max and ignore any driver installation requests.
Run the installer and install the driver.
As the configuration utility we will choose "Microsoft Zero Configuration Tool" - after that just click next until the installation is done.
There might be some warnings regarding the drive - continue anyway.
2.------------------------
Now open the device manager (quick way: Start and type in devmgmt.msc).
The "Rt73 Usb Wireless LAN Card" should show up in the network adaptors section.
Right click on it and choose "Properties" and then "driver" - the date should be 21.20.2008 or newer.
If thats the case skip the next step and continue with the configuration (Step 3).
If that is _not_ the case windows installed its own drivers, and we have to choose the driver manually.
To do this, change to the driver tab and choose "update driver"
Then choose the lower option:
In the next window choose the lower option again:
On the next Window choose "Have disk" and navigate to the driver folder.
It should be "c:\ProgramData\Ralink Driver\RT7x Wireless LAN Card\Driver\"
Double click the RT73.inf file and click ok.
You should now see a window that looks like this:
Click on next and then on close.
You will be back on the properties Window of the card - close and reopen it.
3.------------------------
Choose the "advanced" tab.
In the list you will have to change the following value:
PSP Xlink mode → choose „Enable“ (This will enable the card to work with xlink)
Confirm with „OK“
Note: I also changed the Network type to ad-hoc, but i don't know if that is necessary.
Click ok and close the window and the device manager.
4.------------------------
Open up the network connections window (Quick Way: start and type in control netconnections )
Right click on the Wireless connection and choose "properties".
Double Click on "Internetprotocoll Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
Set the values shown in this screen shot:
Click on ok and close the window.
Just a quick info why i did this: If you set a static IP Address the connection between the PSP and the card will establish a lot quicker, as you will not have to wait for a address to be assigned.
5.------------------------
Boot up your PSP Game and go into the multiplayer lobby.
In my case i played Monster hunter freedom unite – so its the online gathering hall.
If the game you play has more than one lobby, choose always the first one as you will only see people online that are in the same lobby.
Once you are inside the lobby and your psp wifi light is flashing, click on "start" -> "connect to".
Another way to establish the connection is clicking on the "2PCs with the globe" icon in the bottom right corner of your task bar and choose "connect to a network".
In the window choose the PSP_XXXX Network and click connect.
Ignore any warnings regarding the security.
Now you are connected with your PSP and are just moments away from playing on xlink kai.
6.------------------------
Open xlink kai.
What you will see now depends on the client you use, if you use the „Standard-GUI“ do the following, if you use the web interface – see below:

Hey, I'm having a problem at Step 2
When I go to network connections it does not show any connections, I can slightly bypass this by going to device manager and changing it through that but then I still can not change anything after that. Any help would be appreciated |

I have a white Wifi Max as well but I read in the other thread that it won't work. Your guide shows that it should work. Which should I trust? |

Mh did not have that problem yet, only time i had something "similar" was when someone joined my lobby with an old monster hunter game.
I could see him fine, but he could not see me at all - also we had some freezes.
Also sometimes it takes some time until i can see others - have you waited about 30 sec?
Did you try to rejoin the lobby/guild hall? |

Benjanim : The Zydas Driver is only for the Zydas based Wifi Max.
All 3 Wifi Max that friends recently bought were all RT73, for these you dont need the zydas driver.
n-nnnn : Do you use Windows XP? If you use vista you have to install the driver in a different way. |

For the disconnects, just use the Vista utility rather than the Ralink one. It works for me, the connection is solid. |

Just click the little icon at the bottom right with the two monitors and a little globe. Select Connect to a Network and connect to your PSP. |
