Hello,

kaiengine itself works fine, so that's good.

But when installing via the repo the permissions are way off being correct.

Code:
-rw-r--r-- 1 1001 1001       0 Jun  2 15:39 /etc/kaiengine.conf
-rwxr-xr-x 1 1001 1001 3834080 Jun  2 15:39 /usr/bin/kaiengine

I tested this under Ubuntu Bionic and Focal just in case there was some weirdness with my system, though I've never seen anything like this from any package on any machine.

Firstly, the user should probably be root, not UID 1001. 1001 isn't even my UID, it's another user on the system.

Secondly, kaiengine.conf DEFINITELY should not be world readable as it stores the username and password in plaintext.
