XBMC handles chat as follows: when you join an arena you're automatically joining the chat room for that arena (XBMC does not have a concept of seperate arena + chat room). If anyone speaks while you're not in the chat tab, then the visible part of the tab flickers, to indicate chat activity. Flipping between any of the tabs (views) does not change your status, arena/room, or action things on your behalf.
