Ok I'm nearly 100% sure this was proposed before and I know Kai is a tunneling software, but since this forum is visited by the online xbox community, I though it was a good place to post this question.
Would it be possible to make a software emulating XBox Live? I know it was done before with the Battle.NET service from Blizzard Entertainment. The only problem with this was that it was not legal I think and it would probably be the same for an emulator of LIVE.
So from a strict technical point of view, it would be possible to intercept the packets and discover the protocol behing xbox live right? I'm not an xbox develloper but there's probably a xbox live api of some sort in xbc?? Then the software emulating an xbox live server would have to receive the packets, interpret them and react exactly like an xbox live server would...
Imagine a network of server collaborating like the orbitals of xlink kai and you have a xbox live without the monthly fee... It would not work for games that only give downloaded content on LIVE, but it would definitly work for game providing matchmaking like Halo 2 for example...
Anyway just an idea, let's the flamming and good comments begin! |

I'm 100% sure it could be done but it would be a big big task. This would require a LOT of reverse engineering!
Once you know the protocol of xbox live and you know how live is responding in specific situations etc, what is stopping you of making a software responding in the exact same way as a server from live? |

MONEY, time, encryption, maybe even legal issues. |

maybe? You better be prepared for some serious law suits. prison time and huge claims if you'd try that. |

Well I am sure there is a patent, but that only gives them 3 years in the states. Point is money, and why? You cannot compete with M$. |

If you're so sure of yourself, then by all means try it. After all the lawsuits and legal crap you can come back on and tell us how it went. |

Or.... you could just use Kai.
I do believe it could be done. I've seen it done with other games that had a central server, or at least something similar... Creatures 3 rings a bell. |

Well do you know any other way to play Street fighter anniversary edition over the internet without XBL?
Let the emulation begin! |

If anything is released (and I know somethings being worked on) it'll be completely underground. See the way you get the latest xbmc, emulators, file managers etc for your xbox? It'll be the same method. Packet encryption won't make things impossible, just more difficult. Rather than XBL emulation it will be two player emulation, as if someone is sitting right next to you (if you have played Snes9x, GENS or other Netplay enabled emulators on the PC you'll know what I mean). All that is required is the ability to send, decode and recieve packets between each xbox, which is completely feesable. |

Reverse engineering is not illegal. As long as you don't use their copyrighted material I don't see how it can be illegal.
Simply intercepting packets and doing as you wish with them is not considered illegal.
"A law completely outlawing reverse engineering would be like a law making it illegal to open the hood of your car to repair it. Under such a system, car users would be required by law to go to the dealership for all repairs and maintenance."

I just know Mr. Greed (Bill Gates) will find some way to make it illegal for emulation...He wouldn't let anyone play online for free using Live, belive me! Money is his life. |

i'd say its possible. xbl is pretty similar to blizzards battle net service. they both act as a chat, a matchmaker and they keep stats on the games that were played. since theres pvpgn for blizzard (theyre alive for a long time now, but i dont know if they had any lawsuits), i guess this is also possible for xbl. if you search google, theres even documents about the xbl handshake, etc. http://www.computec.ch/dokumente/windows/tcp-ip-implementierung_der_xbox/ (german).
ps.: as i said, i dont know anything about the legal side, so i wont try. |

Interesting, I'll be sure to spread this about once I've found a suitable translation service for it. I doubt it would be a live emulator as such, but more of a means to connect two Xboxes so that it's as if you're sitting beside another person. Xbox live will not be an option, but 2 to 4 player games over the internet will be possible, most hopfully through the Kai XBMC interface
Let's get this show on the road. |
