I think silver (cause its free) only lets you play for free on weekends as it states free xbox live weekends where as the gold package will let you play online 24/7 365 days a year
again all speculation at this point |

correct, nothing is 100% sure at this point.... but if it is true, think of the System overflow lag experience LIVE will have in the weekends unless LIVE automatically signs the free account(silver) to different servers which cross connects to the better subscribed (gold) LIVE
M$ moto will be "If you want something good, pay for it!" lol |

well screw the speculation
here's some FACTS...
the only method ofgaming for free with an xbox 360 is at the weekends (silver service)
and so should there be some form of system link feature (which is anticipated)
then kai will very much so be alive and kicking..
why...
CONFIRMED: BUILT IN ETHERNET PORT::::
which means,,, maybe, they're gonna have system link , which would make sense as joining various consoles by ethernet to then also be abe to play on live, sounds good to me |

i doubt that LIVE will be free, browse other forum, people do not have problem for paying for this service, it cost approx 15 pence per day. Sony (Even Nintendo) may be able to beat Microsoft for it's upcoming console in hardware power...but noway they will beat the service of LIVE. Microsoft revolutionised the on-line game play with their first attempt, while Sony & Nintendo just sat back and thought nothing much about on-line play nor System-link. IMO if M$ is to win the next generation console, then LIVE is their main weapon, if they don't use it wisely then Sony will eat them for breakfast with their on-line capability.
And lot of people may say it's all about the game....well games don't really matter as developers will release the best version of a game to the most powerful console. |
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You say Microsoft revolutionised the on-line game play with their first attempt, microsoft was the first to launch a paid subscription service for consoles that was actually supported fully. Starting and revolutionised are two different things. To revolutionise there must be something to revolutionise. Sony followed microsoft after live was a success. Nintendo at that time didnt believe that online was the future ( obviously that was a stupid thought) The new Live will revolutionise online gaming, but i believe that microsoft is trying to make the xbox 360 more of a computer than anything. I already have a computer. Over $300 for a machine that can do lesser things than my computer.
This also ties in with your other statement :And lot of people may say it's all about the game....well games don't really matter as developers will release the best version of a game to the most powerful console.
Games sell consoles. If halo was on another console during next gen ( which it wont ever) people will buy that console for that game. Halo and xbox live saved the xbox. Look at the reliece of halo 2, more xboxs sold, more halo2 games sold more xbox live subs sold. Halo 1 was a launch title for xbox. No one thought it would be good but people got it with bundle packs and loved it and worshiped it. Im not flaming halo. Halo is awsome my only favorite xbox game.
It very well could be possible for Sony and Nintendo to over power the xbox 360 in console power. One of Sony's advantages is that they are creating HD+Blu ray disks. This will deliver better visuals and larger disk size to make a large emersive experience. Nintendo has inovation and their mascot franchises and experience. People love nintendo mascots. They code named the successor to the cube revolution because it is saposed to revolutionise gaming as we know it. What they have planed, we will have to wait untill next week.
I think the biggest mistake they are making with the xbox 360 was airing that mtv special 1 week before e3 and launching it this november ( saposedly) Sony is rumored to launch the ps3 the middle of 2006 and the revolution late 2006. Everything as we know it in the gaming world will change. Company support will change to different consoles. Only e3 and time will let us know what is in store for us. |

Also you guys are forgetting that Xbox rushed there system out....which means PS3 or Nintendo just might kick xbox outa the game, and we all will own a PS3 or Nintendo instead of a xbox, ... And even though it is free online it doesnt really compare to the xlink community |

I don’t think it was rushed, just good timing. I believe they have been working on this for a while, and by reading about it. I don't think Sony has the resources to compete with M$. Just my opinion. |

Easy one - if they called it Xbox 2, then the PS3 would be one better. Calling it Xbox 3 would be too obvious. |

they rushed the system out? they started developing it a month after they released xbox... not to mention them being kicked outta the game don;t make me laugh ... the reason ps2 has a majority of the market share is because they released it first!!! on top of that there is allready talk of sony pushing the ps3 out in 2005 to try and maintain that market share, MS is smart man they want to be the only ones in the next gen game this christmas season!! |

with a Silver Live account i dont think you will be able to play online on Live every weekend, I think it will only be on specific weekends that they want to promote Live!
perhaps after a release of a big title, to give those gamers who have just bought it, a chance to try it online for free, and so that they will sign up for the gold service.

if it was every weekend they would advertise it as that.
but only time will tell. |

ok yo, i read on most every credible game site, gamespot, gamepro, 1up, etc that the two versions of live will be almost identical except for the fact that only on weekends can a silver account excess actual gameplay. During the week if u only have silver you will only be able to access your profile, avatar, post scores forza prince of persia 2 pgr2 style, download content and movies and demos, some of which there will be a fee for. So in short i think most people will probally stick with kai throught he week, then head on to live and check out its options and get some play there on weekends, Unless microsoft changes it's plans that is how it will be. It is possible that they will because Nintendo is going to expand their DS online service for their next system most likely, meaning all games Nintendo releases will be free to play 24/7, and they leave the rest up to the individual third parties on whether or not to charge for online. Probally it'll be like the FFXI setup, online games that require massive maintence will be charging will others wont. If that is the case, which is 99% gonna happen, nintendo could very well set a new standard for online service. All the functions that you get with live built into the console and the game and u play for free. either way, expect kai to change alot in the future. |

ohh and as far as modding goes, you might be able to do it, but the system uses parts that are more ps2 or nintendo style, i.e either nvidia or ati not sure which (did know cant remember right now) developed an exclusive chip set for graphics and stuff, so its not so pc-ish in nature. I doubt you will be able to get even linux to install on it, it doesn't even have a built in hard-drive but an external usb one, hence the addition of usb ports to the new system. so most likely if you can mod it then dont expect to be checking the weather or emails, the xbox is no longer a dumbed down pc. |
