Cannot detect Xbox

I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have a laptop, i connect to the internet via a wireless usb reciver, my wireless router is in my basement. I have a free ethernet port on my computer, but when i plug the xbox in neither the system nor the computer recognize the other, the lights next to the ports dont blink, everything is just dead. If I plug my comp into a diff router via ethernet and plug the xbox into the same router i get activity, but no communication between the comp and xbox. I think this maybe in part due to the fact that i am connected to my wireless router, i cannot sever this connection though, becuase that is my internet connection. If anyone could help me get connected i would really appreciate it. thank you

you need to get a crossover ethernet cable

normal won't work unless your plugged into a switch

thank you so much, I think I actually have an 8-port switch lying around somewhere, I'll give it a shot, if this works you are a life saver
