i plan to get the premium Xbox 360. but i'm concerned about the standard 20gb HDD size, i heard it's only 12gb and the rest is reserved for system.
if true...WTF!!! some HD movies are over 12gb.
shall i get the core version and wait till Microsoft brings out larger HDD (not worrying to pay now for a memory card) |

Well good luck getting a premium. Shipping ratios here in Toronto were something in the order of 1 premium: 10 core. I settled on a core and bought the other gadgets seperately.
Now as for drive size. 20 GB is relatively puny, I agree. But currently, there is no way to copy movies on it. You can rip music cds but that's about it. I was disappointed to find I could not even copy my picture collection on to it. At this point the only real purpose for the 360 hdd is for playing original Xbox titles. Other then that, it's pretty useless.
I'm hoping someone figures out a way to run unsigned code so that we can get an XBMC sort of system on it to play all different sorts of media over Windows Shares.

Considering that the Linux team is looking at getting linux to boot on it, and we have various other teams working their *Magic* im pretty sure that somebody will do it. |

what if it just puts movies on the HDD in data mode?
You can fit a DVD movie on a CD as long at you don't make it movie format (playable on DVD players).
That would make it have PLENTY of room for movies..
beside... 20 gigs... thats more then the computer i got in my room |

yeah that's what i mean, so if i save few £££ now and don't get the HDD and maybe later get a bigger one.
cos if i upgrade to say, 80gb, that standard 20gb would be on ebay (i'm too lazy to auction it) or laying under my table or bed

Although once you run it through and pop out WMV9 or H.264, the size is less than 700MB if done correctly. Still, the 20GB drive will only be too small if you plan on getting all your media onto the 360 HDD (which you can't, actually, the only media you can save is MP3s ripped from an audio CD, or content from Live). Everything else is streamed from a PC.
Take that into consideration, and suddenly 12GB seems just fine. (And there are plans for HDD upgrades) |

2.5in SATA. Pretty new tech from Samsung... might even be running with one of the new flash buffers which is designed to create a LARGE cache (up to something like 128-512MB) to speed up writing to the drive, and to possibly even allow booting an OS straight from flash in laptops, but I dunno about that part. |

I wonder if that's how they plan to exploit the 360 to get linux on there. |

I mean.. once the modding scene gets really involved in the 360 custom hard drives for the 360 will be released. Im not sure how many gigs a laptop hard drive can handle but that is the amount of space that it will be limited to. And as for the usb ports... once they figure out the right software/bios/os im pretty sure that there will be endless capabilities when it comes to the Hard drives.. pen drives etc.. and as for the wireless and ethernet capabilites.. those could be hooked up to a network drive, like that new maxtor 300GB. Then the media center option could allow movies and such to be loaded from another computer over the network...
I mean.. the list goes on, microsoft may have restricted some options but they also opened new gateways for modders to explore and circumvent. |

it's what i do.
Saves on DVD's.
I'd rather put a movie ona CD. then i jsut just put it in my computer's CD drive in my room and stream it to my modded box. Or if i really wanted to i could just put it on my xbox's HDD, but thats pointless. |

USB is controlled via drivers. The XBOX360 just needs it usb drivers to be flashed for it to work with other equipment. That's why when I hook up a 360 controller to a PC and install the driver that microsoft released, it works on my PC. |

I wonder if that works the other way around, use the xbox to usb adaptor and plug it into the 360, use an old controller and headset..... |

Been there. Done that. She no workie! Was hoping to use my logitech wireless headset on the 360 using my action replay usb plug in. Works really nicely on the PC but the 360 doesn't support it.
