it appears to me that that WRT54Gv5 routers have been hacked to run linux, like the older v1-4 and WRT54GLs. detailed instructions are here. How long before we see a firmware with Kai on it? i've been wanting to run Kai on my router for awhile, but i had a v5. looks like i'm able to run linux, so will we be seeing a Kai firmware for these soon?

i think the only problems (and it could be major i suppose) is that these routers have 8 megs of RAM, and i think only 6 is actually usable. this could make it pretty tricky to add Kai support, but i think you guys can do it!

Yikes... If somebody has one of these routers and is feeling adventurous, then go for it. I don't know offhand how much memory kaid uses up on a router, but if you shut down as many other services as possible it might work.

well, i used that script that hicaow told me, and i managed to download kai stuff to the router, but when i run gokaid, i get a segmentation fault.

here's the error i'm getting:

Code:
KAID: Kai Engine for KaiStation is initialising...
KAID: Kai Engine for KaiStation is starting...
THREAD: Engine thread started...
THREAD: Packet sniffing thread started...
PCAP: Applying libpcap filter...
THREAD: Orbital stream thread started...
THREAD: Datagram server thread started...
KAID: Kai Engine for KaiStation has started...
Segmentation fault

any ideas? maybe it ran out of memory?

The only time I've seen it segfault like that is if the SniffDevice is set incorrectly in kaid.conf. Make sure it's set to br0.

CHA-CHING!

it appears that by rebooting and re-downloading kaid and kaid.conf, all is running, and i can connect to the box by using the kai UI on my computer. it didn't segfault this time, so maybe it was just a bad download? anyway, here's a short instruction on how to do it once you've flashed your v5 to be linux compatible:

first, go to start->run then type
Code:
cmd
. then do a
Code:
telnet <IP_of_router>

username will be "root", password is "admin"

then, just do a
Code:
wget http://ju1c3.com/kaistation_kaid -O gokaid

that will download the kai daemon you need to run the engine, next do a

Code:
 wget http://ju1c3.com/kaid.conf

that gets the config file. finally:

Code:
chmod +x gokaid
./gokaid -d

and hope it doesnt segfault.

EDIT: added -d to ./gokaid up there so that kai would run as a daemon. i'm off to test to make sure it actually works with my xbox.

it seems to me that kai (or it could be the linux on the router) is making the router very unstable. i guess we'll have to wait for a more stable build of kai or DD-WRT. maybe there are some other rouer linux distros we can try. till then, peace!

I've always had good luck with DD-WRT on my wrt54g. It could definitely be problems with not having enough memory. kaid really isn't optimized to be small.

yeah, its definatly not enough memory. i'm researching memory upgrades for my router Smile

apparently it is possible, i just need to find the right chips, and then solder.

i'm afraid of soldering... maybe its better to just buy a WRTG4GL.

maybe future versions of Kai for DD-WRT can be optimized for size?

EDIT: i wonder if maybe a WRT54Gv5 of DD-WRT optimized for kai would work? i mean, i don't need all the advanced features like VPN and whatnot, i'm really just using this as a switch, not a router. so maybe a distro without DHCP, without VPN, and all that, and just enough for Kai, Wireless, and switching.

If anything they'll probably be bigger. Xlink one has a web server built into it for the client in addition to the stuff that kaid has.

You may be able to disable services that you don't need, but I'm not sure it'll make a difference. If you're set on running Kai on your router, the WRT54GL is a way easier solution than trying to upgrade the RAM.

well its not about how easy, its how geeky Smile upgrading the RAM would be much geekier. but you may have a point. i'll look into the older WRT54Gs and the GL's.

on a side note, i found that if i don't access the web admin interface, the router stays stable. it is also stable enough to stream movies from my PC to my xbox running XBMC.

I may be late, but is there a way for ad-hoc(PSP specifically and DS soon) mode to be used with xlink kai?

Running DD-WRT Micro v23 SP1 WRT54GV.5

For ****s and giggles I did what that one guy said:

[qoute]
Now DD-WRT VeryBusyBox v1.01 (2006.05.16-18:16+0000) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

~ # wget http://ju1c3.com/kaistation_kaid -O gokaid
Connecting to ju1c3.com[213.239.218.71]:80
~ # wget http://ju1c3.com/kaid.conf
Connecting to ju1c3.com[213.239.218.71]:80
~ # chmod +x gokaid
~ # ./gokaid -d[/quote]

Is something supposed to happen?
