What boggles my mind is why they spend so much time researching stupid shit like this, and so little time researching alzheimer's or parkinson's. I'd rather be able to remember what I did for my 21 hours yesterday.

Probably researching how to get us to fall into a deep sleep is alot easier then researching alzheimer's, and parkinson's.

And since there they didn't say how much time it took to finally figure this out, you don't know how much time they "wasted" doing this.

I suppose thats true. They never said how many man hours it took to come up with the atomic bomb either, so I imagine it wasn't to much time at all wasted. Rolling Eyes

Anything to do with the human brain takes a lot of hours to understand. I imagine it took a couple of decades to come to this conclusion. That time could've been better spent understanding the more important issues. Its much the same as them coming up with a hard on pill, but not focusing on how to eliminate heart disease. They are entirely related subjects, but not as profitable.

All these scientists get money from private sectors. Those private sectors don't just give the money away, they expect to be able to use that research to make money. You can make a lot more money by marketing a "sleep machine" then totally curing a disease. If small pox was still around today, they wouldn't cure it. They'd come up with a drug to allow you to live with it.

To bad pharmaceutical companies are run by greedy bastards, I totally agree, they would have some expensive drug that only protects you from it for a time period before you need to get it again and claim its the only solution. Thats the problem, everything is done for a reason and its usually for money and the art is getting people to pay the most for it with no consideration.

Sometimes curing something isn't always the best idea. The companies that employ people to help treat men, women, and children with problems need the income. If whatever they were specializing in was cured then what would happen to them? Thousands of people laid off? Poverty level increasing because of that?

Thats not guaranteed to happen, but there are so many possibilities that can happen from one action. Who's to say that cancer hasn't already been cured, but not released.

This reminds me of the discussions in social economics class and world culture trends dealing with globalization. one antidote reduces chance of sickness by 50%, 2 by 75%, 3 by 85% and 4 by 99%, but there are only enough for one per person, should it be ok for one person to pay money for a dosage to reduce their chance by a greater factor thus eliminating the chance for someone else to get it. Should everyone have an equal chance to live or just the wealthy?

There will never be a cure to all diseases, the idea that not focusing on a cure because of economic issues is about as flawed an ideal as i've ever seen. Besides, its in their best interest to keep as many people around as they can, just so they will end up buying their products. If a man has heart disease, he shouldn't be taking viagra. Now if they cure him of this, then he's free to buy all the hookers and beer he wants, thus increasing the economy.

However as it is now, its more profitable to keep the guy on 400 dollar a month meds then sell him a 10 dollar pill to cure it for good. Which is the entire flaw in the medical research community. People keep going on about wearing these little bands and donating to these bastards, but at the end of the day, they aren't going to cure it. The BEST you can hope for is a treatment. If you really want to donate and make a difference, donate to me. I accept paypal. Jiffywhip@gimmesomefuckinmoney.com

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but doesn't a machine that directly alters brainwaves reek of a mind-control device? Who the hell needs Fox News when you can just hook yourself up to this thing?

Ah nevermind... where the hell did I put my tinfoil hat?
