Is your network reachable? Yes
Are you using a port-forward? no/im not sure i havent done anything like that
Is your console being detected? Yes
Brief description of your network setup: D-link di-604 router, my ps2 and pc are hardwired to the router.
Do you use a software firewall? What brand? Have you made any changes to it? I have norton internet security 2002 which allows access to xlink but i disable it anyways.
Operating System? WindowsXP home edition
Problem description? Whenever I start kai I have no connection problems but I look in the console part of it and I get playstation 2 config failed but it IS detected.

you guys probably see people like me everyday with the same problem, thats why i went through the other topics and they still didnt help because i couldnt understand what to do. i went through the automated help section and f.a.q and it looked like it had the solutions but i didnt know how to complete them because im not good with computers. I dont know what your asking me to do when you tell me to forward a port, i do not know where to go and im left confused.so if you do have the solution can you make it in a list of some sort so i can follow it.
so please treat me like im a retarded 90 year old man, thank you |

I am going to have to read some on the Ps2 setup because I am an XBOX guy. It might have something to do with DHCP, someone will respond back soon with more information. |

In a nutshell, DHCP is a method of automatically assigning devices their network addresses. This means all information such as: IP, gateway, subnet mask and DNS can be issued without any intervention. Almost every router out there performs DHCP and most people use it so that they don't need ot mess with settings in their Operating System (me included).
However, there lies a problem with the PS2's and GameCubes when using Kai.
See, Kai has it's own DHCP server, which tries to issue every console that is connected on the Kai network with it's own unique IP address. When connected via a router, the PS2 and GameCubes do not allow Kai to 'release adn renew' the address of the console, when they are already being assigned a DHCP address.
The solution is to stop the router for assigning the PS2 an automatically assigned IP address ie. disable DHCP. Now there's 2 methods for doing this:
- If your router supports it, you can actually block devices from requesting an IP via DHCP through the use of a MAC address
- If your router doesn't support MAC address DHCP blocking, you can just set the IP of the PS2 manually to something on your network ie. if your PC's grab IP's of 192.168.1.100, .101, .102 etc, you could just set the PS2 to 192.168.1.105 (or any other IP not currently in use) |

hehe DHCP sounds simple but the task itself is quite a job.
To get your IP its best to get into your router if you have or are using one. it should show the connections to the LAN in there. Or you can click start then run. Type "cmd" and hit enter with no " in it. Now at the DOS prompt type "ipconfig" again with no " and it will give your IP for Win2K and higher. Win 95 and 98 does it a different way and it’s been so long I may be the wrong dude to ask. |

if you have a dlink you will need to set a port forward.
forward a UDP port say 30000 to the IP of the PC running kai
Also i recomend setting a Static IP for your PC
Then turning off the DHCP server in your router.
Then kai will be able to give a DHCP address to your PS2 and you can get online!

ok but like i said i dont understand how to do these things, and my router isnt able to be configured cause it didnt come with any software.. it had an optional firewall on the cd but i didnt install it.
oh yea and i just noticed something.... when i turn xlink on and then connect with my ps2 xlink will flash configured successfully for about 30 seconds, then my ps2 goes passed the connection screen and a message comes up saying it was disconnected (and my ps2 freezes), at this point xlink says auto config failed...is this normal? |
