I have a PC connected to a modem (AT&T U-Verse). However, my PS3 is set up in a different room and connected to my laptop.
Can I set up Xlink Kai on laptop and play games online from there or does my PS3 need to be connected directly to my PC (which is in a completely different room) vs being connected to my laptop that is already in the PS3 room?
thanks for all your help.

Yes, this should work. If it don't work select the network adapter in XLink settings that has PS3 plug in to it.
