I've moved last year from Germany to South America and left my PS3 behind.(and a MH hunting friend)
Now I've recently learned about the PSP tunneling solution from Sony using the PS3 - AdHocParty

compared to XLink what are the Ups and Downs of this?

well, I mean Pro: way easier setup
but i'm referring to things like Ping and stability

has anyone made experiences with it?

I was planning on having the PS3 send to me
but if XLink provides a better connection I may just leave it

From what I read, all that has to do with your Internet connection, not the programs themselves.
