Old school: I loved Perfect Dark what a great game, multiplayer and single player both were a lot fun and very time consuming. But Golden Eye still stands out if even for nostalgic value.

Multiplayer: RB6 is still the benchmark FPS tactical shooter, (aside from the glitches) the MAP project releasing new maps all the time made for immensely fun and varied game nights, every night (pistols in paintball anyone?)

Single player: Halo 1, stands out.

Yes, I truly agree. But if people just stick to their own opinions and disregard criticizing others, this thread will be fine. Anyways, as of today, I think Halo 2 would be the best FPS because of its immense capabailities from what people fans have made it become so far. And the fact that you can give a headshot with such ease is worth playing with other for years to come. Cool

FPS - has to be pc based. I can't get on with a joypad and FPS.

Doom2 is the daddy - just enough gfx to make it interesting, but not detract from the action. The sfx was enough so you could work out where the enemy was, but not too much to confuse.

The original Unreal had good atmos in single player, but UT2k4 is runner up for the number of game modes as standard.

Apols for bumping up the thread, but does "ever" have a time limit? Wink

Duke nukem 3D really got me into FPS. I played Doom but never really enjoyed it for too long.

Loving single player Half-life 2 and online Black Arrow.

Quake 2 also has a special place in my heart (the reason I bought two 3DFX Vodoo 2 cards) Smile

Haha not all matey I used to go to a, ahem, 'computer club' once a week and whilst everyone else was busy with doom/duke/quake we were letting rip on HG. I still have my 1200+HD so no changing discs (-: Gloom on the amiga was also awesome.

Goldeneye (1st truly accesible Multi-FPS)
Half Life 1 (best 1 player mode)
Half Life:Team Fortress (easy to pick up, hard to master)

Hired Guns was some awsome 4 player split screen on the Amiga back in the day which ran on only 2MB and 4 floppy 1.4MB discs.

Golden Eye was way ahead of it's time when it came out on the N64.

Rainbow Six 3 and Black Arrow on the xbox for the global online multiplayer with voice that you can play and forget that it is 5am in the morning and that you should go to sleep.

The Ghost Recon Series is up there too.

Small correction it actually ran on 1mb, even on a 500! The awesome Psygnosis team made it. I never completed it though the 'sea-dragon' creatures on the prison level always wasted me. It had strafe as well if you played with a mouse giving 1 player an immediate advantage!

Check out the website the image comes from if you want to know more about Psygnosis.

You got the sound upgrade if you played on the 1200 with 2MB Wink

The sound was a big part of that game.

I got a 2mb upgrade plus a (wow) 400mb HD that cost about £125 way back when. Trouble was very few games overall were HD installable but the magazines used to give installer programs away with the cover floppys.
